I see posts asking why Kylo Ren wears a mask since Vader’s mask served a functional purpose (to breath), and they tease him saying he’s trying to copy Vader or be dramatic. But they conveniently forget that all the foot soldiers who work for the Galatic Empire and the First Order wore masks. The Knights of Ren, the Stormtroopers, Captain Phasma, etc. The only ones who don’t wear masks are the officers and generals who don’t go out into the field.
I can’t speak for the writers of Star Wars, but I always assumed that members of the Galatic Empire and later on the First Order wore masks to dehumanize themselves. The same reasons warriors have always worn masks (knights, Samurais, etc.) If the enemy can’t see your face or look into your eyes, it’s like you’re a monster. It strikes fear into them. And it also strips away the individuality and identities of the soldiers (the same way Stormtrooper’s having numbers instead of names does). It’s all about control. Controlling the soldiers and controlling the reactions of the enemies.
Like that scene where Rey describes Kylo as a “creature in a mask”. She didn’t see him as human until after he removed the mask. And that’s the whole point.
“The idea is that these wonderful sort of feral creatures had lived on this planet (Crait) and had consumed the planet’s surface, and as such had become crystalline. They live within the burrows and within the tunnels beneath the planet,” Neal Scanlan, head of the Star Wars creature shop, says. “So there is a time where their ability to shine within the darkness, should provide a guiding light to our heroes.”
The creatures were designed by Aaron McBride and Pablo Hidalgo came up with their name from the Latin word for fox, and the name of the fox genus, vulpes and vertices (singular: vertex), or the corners of any polyhedron, a shape assimilated with crystals.
This is the typwnofnworld building shit I’m here for. This. Yes. Yaaaas.
Even after her death Carrie Fisher is having none of your bullshit.
Heather Ross, a friend of Fisher’s, spoke to a local radio station in Tucson, AZ. about her experience with sexual assault in Hollywood. On the 94.9 Morning Mix, Ross recalled inappropriate advances from a big name producer and how Fisher made clear she had a zero-tolerance policy for that kind of behavior.
After Ross was assaulted by “an Oscar-winning producer” – not Weinstein, but another – Fisher was furious. After the initial shock and fear wore off, Fisher ran into the producer at Sony and delivered him a package.
“It was a cow tongue from Jerry’s Famous Deli with a note that said, ‘If you ever touch my darling Heather or any other woman again, the next delivery will be something of yours in a much smaller box.’”
The cow tongue was all Fisher’s idea, natch, and she made sure to deliver it in person and watch him open the box.
“That’s just how she was,” Ross said. “I miss her dearly. She stood up for people.”
“That’s who Carrie Fisher was,” she added. “She put things out there and in your face.”
how do you even top something like this??? you don’t. that’s how.
